onSET · Strong verbs (Ablaut)

No rule for this one — only patterns to recognize

"Machen" is a boring verb in the best way: the stem never moves, no matter the tense — machen, machte, gemacht. "Finden" isn't so kind: the vowel inside the stem itself changes as the tense changes — finden, fand, gefunden. There's no ending rule that gets you from finden to fand. You either recognize the pattern or you don't.

These vowel shifts aren't random, though — they follow a limited set of recurring patterns (called Ablaut). Four of the most common:

MusterInfinitivPräteritumPartizip II
i – a – ufindenfandgefunden
e – a – onehmennahmgenommen
ei – ie – ieschreibenschriebgeschrieben
a – u – afahrenfuhrgefahren
