onSET, the German placement test

onSET is a computer-based German test: eight short texts with gaps, 40 minutes. At the VWU you take it in person, in Vienna. There's no pass mark. Right after the test, your total score is converted into a level, from A2 to C1. You can't fail it: the score only decides which stage of the German course you start at, and so how many semesters you'll need. Who takes onSET, and why

Most often, onSET is required by the preparatory division itself: at the VWU, the placement test takes the form of onSET. The result decides two things. First, your German course stage. Second, where you study if there aren't enough places at the VWU itself: places go to the top scorers, and everyone else is sent to a partner school, where a semester costs €1,890 instead of €612. The cutoff is different every time, because it's a competition for places, not a fixed threshold. More on the groups in the article on the VWU and its partners.^1·3·4

You don't pick your own test date. The VWU hands out dates roughly in order of pre-registration, and you can't reschedule yours. If you registered late, your date opens later in the VWU's student portal, portal.vwu.at, but there's nothing to pick there either. Only your stage and your test score count toward a place at the VWU. The number people quote in chats isn't confirmed by anything official.¹

An onSET result doesn't replace a C1 certificate: at admission, Universität Wien accepts C1 only from its own list of documents, and onSET isn't on it. A high score gets you into a higher stage, but it counts for nothing at admission.⁵

How the C-test is built

The test has eight texts, each with exactly 20 gaps, 160 in total.²

Every text opens with a heading and one full sentence, and closes with one or two full sentences. Read those first: they tell you what the text is about, and once you know that, plenty of gaps become guessable from context. You can't tell how many letters are missing from a gap, either: every blank looks the same.²

What to do during the test

You get five minutes per text, forty for the whole test. When the five minutes are up, the next text opens and whatever time you had left is gone: say you finish an easy text in three minutes, and those two spare minutes don't carry over to the next one. So don't get stuck on one gap: work through the whole text first, then come back to the hard spots before its five minutes run out.²

Every correct gap earns a point, and a wrong answer and a blank both earn zero: there's no penalty for a mistake. So fill in every gap; a wrong guess costs you nothing. Check your keyboard layout beforehand, too: typing ae for ä counts as wrong.²

How to prepare for onSET

1. Take one test in the onSET trainer: it's free and checks your answers right away.
2. See which gaps trip you up: endings, articles, function words, or the words themselves.
3. Train exactly that by reading aloud and working through sentences. The C-test measures how fast you can restore a text: you see the start of a word, hold the sentence structure in your head, and fill in the rest.
4. Take the test again in a week or two and compare.
