A trainer for the oral Biology exam at the VWU
We are building a trainer where you answer questions on every part of the catalogue out loud and then see what a full answer includes. Below is one question for each part.
Take one breath apart
An example of how the trainer will work: the drawing walks you through one question of the catalogue, then a task checks whether you can use it.
Why air goes into the lungs
Pull the diaphragm down and hold it. Let go, and it relaxes. At step 5 you can pull the lower ribs too.
What the three parts of the catalogue cover
The trainer will be organised by these parts of the exam.
- Part 1: from the features of life and the origin of life through the cell, viruses, fungi and immunity to human reproduction and development
- Part 2: the animal kingdom and the human organ systems
- Part 3: plants, the microscope, genetics, evolution, air and water pollution
What the trainer will have
Practice questions on the three parts of the catalogue, short theory for them, sketch practice and the outline of a full answer after every try.
Questions by catalogue part
Practice questions in our own words for every part of the catalogue. You answer out loud, as in the exam.
Theory and sketches
Short texts on the catalogue topics and sketch practice: cells, organelles, organs.
What a full answer includes
After every try you see the outline of a full answer: what to name, how to explain it and which example to give.

You answer three questions, one from each of the three parts of the question catalogue, in front of a commission of three: your examiner, a second VWU teacher and a university representative, who chairs it. The grade runs from 1 (very good) to 5 (fail); a 5 means the exam is not passed.
The VWU does not publish a preparation time, an exam length or a pass rule per question for Biology, so we do not name any. The official documents only say that the exam is oral and that one question is drawn from each part.
Part 1 runs from the features of life through the cell, viruses, fungi and immunity to human reproduction and development; part 2 covers animals and the human organ systems; part 3 plants, the microscope, genetics, evolution and pollution. The catalogue dates from 2019, the syllabus from 2017.
MedUni Wien lists Biology among the VWU subjects for human and dental medicine, together with German, Chemistry, Physics and Mathematics. That is a different exam from the old Zusatzprüfung Biologie, which MedUni Wien dropped because its admission procedure already covers biology.
The exam fee is €46, and an exam can be repeated at most four times. You can withdraw from an oral exam up to one week before the first day of the oral exams.
