A trainer for the oral History exam at the VWU
We are building a trainer where you answer questions on all 4 parts of the topic list out loud and then see what a full answer includes: the events, the dates and the topics they connect to.
The 4 parts of the topic list
The trainer will be organised by these parts of the exam.
- Part 1: sources of history, the Stone and Metal Ages, Mesopotamia and Egypt, Crete and Mycenae, ancient Greece, the Roman Empire and Austria Romana, early Christianity, the Frankish Empire and the Holy Roman Empire, feudalism, monasteries
- Part 2: knights, the Crusades, medieval towns and trade, Romanesque and Gothic, the Babenbergs and the rise of the Habsburgs, the voyages of discovery, humanism and the Renaissance, the Reformation and the Counter-Reformation, Baroque and the Enlightenment
- Part 3: absolutism in France and Austria, Maria Theresa and Joseph II, Prussia, Russia under Peter the Great and Catherine the Great, Russia from 1914 to 1991, the English parliament, the USA, the French Revolution and Napoleon, the Congress of Vienna, 1848, the Industrial Revolution and the labour movement
- Part 4: imperialism, modern art and Vienna around 1900, the First World War and the peace treaties, the First Republic of Austria, the crisis of 1929, fascism and National Socialism, antisemitism, the Second World War, post-war Austria and the State Treaty
What the trainer will have
Practice questions on all 4 parts of the topic list, short theory for every topic, timelines to keep the events in order and the outline of a full answer after every try.
Questions for the 4 parts
Practice questions in our own words for every topic on the list. You answer out loud, as in the exam.
Theory and timelines
Short texts on each topic and timelines that put the events in order, from the Stone Age to the State Treaty.
What a full answer includes
After every try you see the outline of a full answer: what to name, which dates matter and which related topic to bring in.
The History trainer is on its way

Oral, 3 questions from 3 of the 4 parts
There is no written part and no published time limit. The grade runs from 1 (very good) to 5 (fail). The information sheet asks you to connect related topics, so a strong answer moves from one topic to the next.

You get 3 questions from 3 of the 4 parts of the topic list, never two from the same part, in front of a commission of three: your examiner, a second VWU teacher and a university representative, who chairs it. The grade runs from 1 (very good) to 5 (fail); a 5 means the exam is not passed.
The VWU does not publish a preparation time, an exam length, the allowed aids or how the answers make up the grade for History, so we do not name any. The official documents only say that the exam is oral and how the questions are drawn.
Part 1 runs from the sources of history and the Stone Age through Greece and Rome to the Frankish Empire; part 2 from the knights and the Crusades to Baroque and the Enlightenment; part 3 from absolutism to the labour movement, with Russia up to 1991; part 4 from imperialism and Vienna around 1900 through both world wars to the State Treaty.
No. Apart from German and English, the VWU publishes no official model exams. For History it publishes the list of topics for each of the 4 parts on vwu-info.at; the course works with the VWU's own script.
The exam fee is €49, and an exam can be repeated at most four times. The next oral exams run from 30 November to 3 December 2026; you register from 16 to 29 October 2026, until noon, on portal.vwu.at, and can withdraw up to one week before the first day of the oral exams. This window falls outside the universities' admission period, so passing then does not move you into regular studies for the winter semester 2026.
