Exam Format

Written Exam ⏱️ 3 hours

  • 9–10 problems
  • Teil A + Teil B
  • Paper-based solution; a simple (non-programmable) calculator is allowed in both parts, see 'What You Can and Cannot Bring'
  • Formelsammlung (official formula collection) allowed, see section 'What you can bring'

Oral Exam 🎤

  • 2 questions, about 20 minutes to prepare
  • Then you present your answers to a 3-person committee, which asks follow-up questions; both answers must be positive
  • No oral if 3 of the 4 bonus grades from the course exercises are positive

Need ≥50% in Teil A

3 tasks, basic topics

Teil B

Need ≥50% in Teil B

6–7 tasks, advanced topics

Final Grade

No separate minimum

Only sets the grade, once each part has at least 50%

Fees

€66. No additional payment required for the oral exam

  • Grading scale: 1 (very good), 2 (good), 3 (satisfactory), 4 (sufficient), 5 (insufficient/unsatisfactory).
  • Grade 5 is negative: exam not passed; maximum four retakes allowed.
  • Certificate issuance: on scheduled days; have ID with you.

What You Can and Cannot Bring

Allowed

  • Photo ID document
  • Writing supplies (pens, pencil, eraser)
  • Simple geometric ruler/triangle, compass (if permitted by local classroom rules)
  • Formelsammlung, the official formula collection (without personal notes or inserts; permitted in accordance with organizers' instructions).

Simple (non-programmable) calculator

The approved models are named in a separate VWU document that is not public. Ask your course teacher or the VWU which model you may bring: calculators are checked at the exam, and one that does not comply is taken away.

Not Allowed

  • Electronic devices (including smartwatches, phones) must be turned off and put away
  • Programmable/graphical calculators and any models not on the approved list, reference books, printouts, additional formula sheets
  • Any materials not permitted by supervisors
