Konjunktiv II
To sound polite in German, you need Konjunktiv II. Helfen Sie mir! is a command. Könnten Sie mir helfen? is a request. This shift is one of the most practical grammar skills for the EPD: it appears in sentence transformation tasks (polite reformulations), in Textproduktion (suggestions and recommendations), and in gap-fill exercises.
Konjunktiv II has two main functions: (1) polite requests and suggestions, and (2) unreal conditions (situations that are hypothetical, imagined, or contrary to fact).
Formation
Regular: würde + infinitive (the standard form for most verbs)
- Ich würde gern nach Wien fahren.
Irregular: dedicated Konjunktiv II form, obligatory for sein, haben, and all modal verbs. Using würde with these verbs is understood but stylistically wrong.
Conjugation: würde-form and key irregular forms
The table shows the forms you need for the EPD. wäre, hätte, and the modal forms (könnte, müsste, etc.) fully replace the würde construction for these verbs:

Other important forms: wüsste (wissen), ginge (gehen), käme (kommen), bräuchte (brauchen), gäbe (geben), ließe (lassen).
Unreal Conditional Sentences
With wenn + Konjunktiv II you describe a situation that does not match reality: either unlikely or simply not true. Pattern: wenn-clause in Konjunktiv II, main clause also in Konjunktiv II (usually with würde):
- Wenn ich reich wäre, würde ich reisen.
- Wenn er Zeit hätte, würde er kommen.
- Wenn ich besser Deutsch könnte, würde ich die Prüfung bestehen.
- Hätte ich mehr Geld, würde ich ein Auto kaufen. (without "wenn": verb moves to position 1)

Polite Requests and Suggestions
Konjunktiv II softens requests and commands. In Textproduktion (when giving advice or recommendations) it is essential:
- Könnten Sie mir bitte den Weg zeigen?
- Es wäre schön, wenn Sie kommen könnten.
- Ich würde vorschlagen, dass wir früher anfangen.
- Dürfte ich Sie etwas fragen?
- Wären Sie so freundlich, mir zu helfen?
Unreal Wishes
- Ich wünschte, ich wäre schon fertig mit der Prüfung.
- Wenn ich doch nur mehr Zeit hätte!
- Hätte ich das bloß früher gewusst!
- Ich wünschte, ich könnte besser Deutsch sprechen.
Rephrase politely: Helfen Sie mir!
Form an unreal conditional: Ich habe keine Zeit. Ich lese nicht viel.
würde + Past Infinitive (Konjunktiv II of the Past with Modals)
In more complex EPD texts (particularly in Textproduktion and sentence transformation tasks) you may encounter constructions where Konjunktiv II combines with a past infinitive (double infinitive). This pattern expresses what someone should have, could have, or would have done:
- Er hätte das früher sagen müssen. — He should have said that earlier.
- Sie hätte den Text schreiben können. — She could have written the text.
- Wir hätten das vermeiden sollen. — We should have avoided that.
The structure is: hätte + past participle + modal infinitive. You do not need to produce these forms spontaneously, but you should recognise them in reading comprehension and be able to use them in guided transformation tasks.
Common Mistakes
würde + sein / haben — always wrong on the exam:
❌ ich würde sein → ✓ ich wäre
❌ ich würde haben → ✓ ich hätte
sein and haben always form Konjunktiv II with their own dedicated forms. The same applies to all modal verbs: ich würde können is wrong — the correct form is ich könnte. Using the wrong form will cost points in both transformation tasks and Textproduktion.
Why this matters on the EPD specifically: Examiners treat würde sein and würde haben as clear grammatical errors, not as stylistic imprecisions. Even if a native speaker might occasionally say würde haben in casual speech, the exam context demands the correct forms wäre and hätte. If you catch yourself writing würde followed by sein or haben, stop and replace it immediately.
Dropping wenn → verb moves to position 1:
When wenn is omitted, the verb moves to the front. This is not an error — it is a common stylistic variant:
✓ Wenn ich Zeit hätte, ...
✓ Hätte ich Zeit, ... (same meaning, verb in position 1)
Konjunktiv II ≠ Konjunktiv I:
Konjunktiv I (er sei, er habe, er komme) is used in indirect speech, which is a completely different function. Do not confuse the two.
